Bariatric and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery

Henry Hook is a General Surgeon with an interest in Upper GI surgery working in Orange NSW. He has appointments at Orange Health Service (referral centre for Western NSW) Dudley Private and Ramsay Surgical Centre Orange. He has a VMO appointment at Prince of Wales Hospital Randwick.

Henry’s medical degree was from the University of NSW and his surgical training was through Liverpool Hospital and St Vincents Hospital Darlinghurst. He was awarded the FRACS in 2003 and went on to further training in upper GI and HPB surgery as the Lister Fellow at the Royal Infirmary Glasgow in 2004/ 2005.

His area of interest includes benign and malignant conditions of the oesophagus/stomach/pancreas and biliary system. He has authored a book chapter on the management of acute severe pancreatitis and has published research on the role of SMAD 4 mutations in the prognosis of pancreatic carcinoma. Main procedural interests are laparoscopic surgery including advanced upper GI surgery, therapeutic endoscopy including ERCP and general surgery. Most recently, Henry has been appointed to the Court of Examiners for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.

He is a rural representative for the Clinical Excellence Commission.

Dr Jared Chang is a specialist surgeon who cares for patients across central western NSW. He looks after people with a wide range of surgical needs, including breast conditions, thyroid and parathyroid problems, as well as surgical oncology (including complex melanoma, lymph node surgery and sarcoma)

Dr Chang consults at the Orange Specialist Clinic and the Mudgee VMO Clinic, and performs surgery at Orange Health Service, Dudley Private Hospital, Ramsay Surgical Centre Orange, and Mudgee Health Service.

He is part of the team at the Central West Cancer Care Centre and routinely participates in the Breast and General, Skin and Head & Neck Multidisciplinary Team meetings.

A keen interest in teaching is maintained as a clinical lecturer for the School of Rural Health, University of Sydney. Teaching/mentoring extends to accredited general surgical trainees in his role as the RACS Supervisor of Surgical Training, in General Surgery at Orange Health Service

Dr Dan Breen is a General Surgeon with a post-fellowship training in Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery, including metabolic/bariatric/obesity surgery, oesophagogastric cancer surgery and interventional upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and ERCP. Dr Dan Breen completed general surgical training at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne and post-fellowship subspecialty training at University Hospital Geelong. Dr Breen has particular interests in weight loss/bariatric surgery, reflux and hiatus hernia surgery. 

Dr Breen also provides care for patients across a broad range of general surgical conditions including abdominal wall and groin hernias, colonoscopy and gallbladder surgery.

Dr Preet Gosal is a Specialist General Surgeon based in Orange, NSW, with expertise in both elective and emergency procedures. He has a particular clinical interest in complex hernia repair and abdominal wall reconstruction. He is a member of ANZ Hernia Society.

Dr Gosal graduated with Distinction from the University of New England in 2014 and was awarded the prestigious Rural Doctor’s Network Cadetship in recognition of his dedication to rural healthcare. He completed his early medical training at Wagga Wagga Base Hospital before obtaining his Fellowship in General Surgery through the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2021 in the Western Sydney Network. He then undertook a specialist fellowship in Acute Care Surgery at Nepean Hospital.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr Gosal is actively involved in medical education and research. He is a senior lecturer with the University of Sydney and regularly contributes to peer-reviewed journals and academic publications.

He is a member of the Gastroenterological Society of Australia and accredited provider of Gastroscopy and Colonoscopy.

Breast and Melanoma Surgery

Dr Binks is a specialist breast, melanoma, and general surgeon consulting at Orange Specialist Clinic. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS), having completed his general surgery training in 2022.

Throughout his surgical training, Dr Binks developed a strong interest in minimally invasive procedures, particularly laparoscopic gallbladder and hernia surgery. During this time, he also completed a Master of Traumatology at the University of Newcastle, published over a dozen peer-reviewed research papers, and presented at several national and international surgical conferences. He holds GESA certification in endoscopy and has extensive experience in performing both colonoscopy and gastroscopy.

Dr Binks’ interest in breast surgery began during his general surgical training, particularly in the evolving field of oncoplastic breast surgery and its critical need in regional communities. Following his general surgery fellowship, he was selected into the highly competitive Breast Surgeons of Australia and New Zealand (BSANZ) Post-Fellowship Training Program. He undertook his first year of post-fellowship training on the Central Coast of NSW, gaining hands-on experience in the management of benign and malignant breast disease, including advanced oncoplastic procedures such as Wise-pattern therapeutic mammoplasty, LICAP flap breast conservation, and implant-based breast reconstruction.

He completed his final year of BSANZ post-fellowship training at Royal North Shore and Mater Hospitals in Sydney, training alongside many of Australia’s leading breast and plastic surgeons. This year further refined his expertise in complex breast cancer care, breast reduction surgery, and explant surgery with mastopexy.

Dr Binks is committed to expanding access to high-quality breast reconstruction services in regional NSW. He currently offers immediate implant-based breast reconstruction privately at Dudley Private Hospital and has submitted a proposal to introduce publicly funded breast reconstruction at Orange Health Service, aiming to commence this service in 2025.

In addition to his work in breast surgery, Dr Binks undertook dedicated melanoma surgery training during his final post-fellowship year at the Melanoma Institute of Australia (MIA), one of the world’s leading melanoma treatment centres. He is enthusiastic about delivering advanced melanoma care to patients in Orange and the Central West, ensuring patients can access specialist care closer to home. This service aligns with recent regional developments, including the appointment of a specialist melanoma nurse via MIA.

Dr Joel Cooper is a General gastroenterologist and physician practicing in Orange. Dr Cooper is a Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist focused on providing patient centred care. He investigates and manages the range of Gastroenterological conditions including iron deficiency, reflux, irritable bowel syndrome and coeliac disease, but has a special interest in liver diseases such as hepatitis and all forms of chronic liver disease and inflammatory bowel disorders. He is a member of the Gastroenterological Society of Australia and accredited provider of Gastroscopy and Colonoscopy. He is an accredited provider of intestinal ultrasound, and provides outreach services to Parkes and Forbes.

Dr Cooper graduated from the University of Notre dame in 2011, and received his fellowship from the Royal Australian College of Physicians in 2022. He is a senior lecturer in medicine at the University of Sydney and medical block coordinator at the School of Rural health located in Orange.

Dr Miguel Marquez grew up in Sydney Western Suburbs and after one year at UNSW, migrated back to Uruguay to continue his studies. After graduating and working in Acute Care for a year, he migrated back to Australia and undertook his specialist training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Westmead Hospital.

Throughout his career Miguel has been actively involved in the education of medical students, junior doctors and nursing staff. He has also been active in presenting at education sessions for GP’s and also holds a position as Clinical Lecturer in the University of Sydney’s Medical School (Rural Health) and is a Director on the Board of Examiners at Diploma level for the Royal Australian New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologist (RANZCOG).

Miguel spent 3 years of his training at Dubbo Hospital where he gained knowledge into the holistic approached needed to practice in a rural community – and his passion for supporting rural medicine drove him to set up practice in Dubbo, were he initiated Dubbo’s only Urodynamics Service.

In May 2016 he moved to Orange and continues to enjoy being able to provide comprehensive medical service to the rural community, travelling to Parkes, Cowra and Mudgee for clinics and surgery.

Paediatrician

Dr Phoebe Loxton is a paediatrician, holding dual qualifications as a specialist in Immunology and Allergy, and General Paediatrics.

Phoebe graduated from the University of Sydney in 2009 and undertook her paediatric training through the Sydney Children’s Hospital Network, where she held a fellowship in immunology. Phoebe is a member of ASCIA, the peak professional body for immunologists in Australia and New Zealand, and a member of the ASCIA Paediatric Committee.

Phoebe specialises in diagnosing and managing children with food allergies, allergic rhinitis, hives, and eczema. She can initiate treatment with immunotherapy and plan food challenges. She has experience diagnosing and caring for children with inborn errors of immunity and recurrent fever syndromes.

Phoebe also enjoys the variety of work as a general paediatrician, looking after children from birth to adolescence with a range of medical, behavioural, and developmental difficulties.

She aims to deliver a family-centred and evidence-based approach, understanding each child as an individual and working collaboratively as part of a team.

Phoebe is also a member of the Neurodevelopmental Behavioural Paediatric Society of Australasia and has interest in neurodevelopmental care to promote secure infant attachment.
